As a birth options expert, author, and educator, Henci Goer has made analyzing and synthesizing obstetric research her life’s work, with the goal of giving pregnant women, birthing people, and birth professionals access to what constitutes safe, effective care. Over the decades, she has written consumer education pamphlets and numerous articles for trade, consumer, and academic periodicals. She has also written books for birth professionals and for pregnant women and birthing people, including The Thinking Woman’s Guide to a Better Birth (1999). In recognition of the first of her professional books, Obstetric Myths Versus Research Realities (1995), she was given Lamaze International’s President’s Award. Its successor, Optimal Care in Childbirth: The Case for a Physiologic Approach (2012), coauthored by Amy Romano, MSN, CNM, received the American College of Nurse-Midwives Best Book of the Year Award. Henci served as project director and participated as an Expert Work Group member on the Coalition for Improving Maternity Services document “Evidence Basis for the Ten Steps of Mother-Friendly Care,” which was given DONA International’s John Kennell and Marshal Klaus Award. Her most recent project is the Take Charge of Your Birth series—short books on single topics to help readers make informed choices and obtain optimal care for themselves and their babies.
